There’s really nothing more thrilling than pulling off a proposal shoot, and this one was a particular challenge, and therefore a particular thrill.
Ashlea is notoriously hard to surprise, but Dan was determined that if she was going to be surprised just once in her life, it would be his proposal, and he knew she would love the moment documented.
Challenge: accepted.
Ashlea’s mum was involved from the get-go as the official chief of communication and the woman-in-the-middle who ensured it all came together without Ashlea suspecting a thing. Together, we concocted an exceptionally elaborate ruse to get them to a photoshoot with me (I won’t give away details, but my goodness, we did good! No stone was left unturned, no avenue for her to question was left open, *high-five* team).
To make sure we weren’t sprung before D-Day (or should I say, P-Day) Dan and I talked only once; briefly on the phone while Ash wasn’t around in order to confirm exactly how I would get the ring into his hands during the shoot without Ashlea seeing – you see, the ring was to be delivered to me earlier that day by Ashlea’s mum so that she couldn’t possibly stumble across it – I told you we went to great lengths!
The session began as normal; pictures were made, I apologised to Dan for scheduling the session on Grand Final Day (heh, heh) and then, after we slipped the ring into Dan’s hands like absolute ninjas, the real purpose of the afternoon began and the rest was absolute magic. You really can’t beat the emotion and connection that comes out of an actual engagement shoot.
Enjoy the ride

Very special thanks to the incredible Lancaster family for allowing me to use their property for this session in order to avoid the long-weekend crowds – your generosity helped make this moment exactly what it was supposed to be.
